AFTER SETTING A PERSONAL RECORD for quickly opening and closing a gate, Scott called Wyatt Underwood to thank him for letting them use his farm’s shortcut. He mentioned spotting a whitetail buck on the property but left the close encounter out of his recap. Lauren was grateful their exit was uneventful compared to their arrival. She’d been deeply touched when Scott shared how he came to be a double amputee and accidental astronomer. She was processing all the surprises, and she knew this would forever be the most extraordinary shortcut of her life.

Lauren leaned a bit to the right and squinted at the landscape through the windshield. She knew where they were, and she sent up a prayer as the road curved toward the right. “It’ll be around this corner,” she said. A tall chain-link fence came into view, separating the street from an unkempt plot of land. Lauren scanned the area, seeing overgrown weeds, a few trees, and one abandoned schoolhouse. “It’s still there!”

“It’s still standing!” Ivy clapped. “You are winning this contest, Lauren!”

Brenner pulled over at an angle so his headlights would shine on the front of the schoolhouse. They all got out of the truck and looked at the building through the chain-link fence. Their bodies blocked the light coming from the truck, and their collective shadow darkened the one-story building. Scott, Ivy, and Brenner stepped away from the headlights to allow the light through. Lauren sat on the grass below the lights and lifted her phone against the chain-link fence, trying to frame the shot through a diamond-shaped chain link. She took a few pictures but wasn’t happy with the images.

“Want me to turn on the brights?” Lauren nodded, and Brenner reached in his truck and switched on the high beams. The schoolhouse was drenched with LED lighting, making it difficult to look at the building.

Scott shielded his eyes. “Damn, B.”

Lauren knew her photo would be washed out, but she took it anyway. As expected, the front of the structure was obscured by light. “Low beams it is,” she said to Brenner. “But it was a great idea.”

After Brenner turned off the high beams, Lauren had to blink away the white spots bouncing before her eyes.

“I’ll have to get closer,” she said. “Use the truck for light, but take the photo from the side.”

“I’ll bring these in case.” Brenner reached into the truck and grabbed the flashlights and headlamps they had used for the dumpster dive. “Sully, you see any security?” he asked before he locked his truck.

“Negative.” Scott said, “Not even barbed wire. It’s almost too easy.”

It hadn’t occurred to Lauren to scan the area for security. “There is one filthy ‘No Trespassing’ sign.” Brenner tossed the equipment over the fence. As the flashlights and headlamps crossed the top, Lauren looked at him. “I’d love help getting over the fence, but all of us don’t need to trespass for me to take a picture.”

“Ivy wasn’t kidding when she called it a death trap.” Brenner pointed to the left corner of the battered roof.
